Search for a free game and you know how it goes. You click a result. A cookie banner. Then an ad. Then a video ad you cannot skip for five seconds. Then a box asking you to make an account. Somewhere behind all that there is a game.
By then you have given up, or you have forgotten what you came for. That is not an accident. It is how those sites make money.
What the ads actually cost you
It is not just annoying. Every ad script is a separate download from a separate company. On a slow phone or an old laptop that is the difference between a game that opens in two seconds and one that takes twenty.
It also breaks things. Ad scripts are the most common reason a game stutters, a school network blocks a page, or a phone browser runs out of memory and reloads the tab you were playing in.
- Slower loading, because the page waits on other companies servers.
- More battery used, because those scripts keep running while you play.
- More blocks, because filters look at ad networks first.
- Less privacy, because that is the whole point of the tracking.
What no sign up really means
A lot of sites say free and mean free after you make an account. That is a trade. You give an email address, you get a game and a mailing list.
Every game in this arcade opens without one. Your best scores are saved in your own browser, on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is asked for.
Good places to start
If you have five minutes, a puzzle is the better use of it. If you have two, take a runner. All of these open straight into the game.
