Game credits & licensing

Where a game came from matters. Here is how we handle it, and how to reach us if we got yours wrong.

The 48 games in the GamerX arcade come from two places. Some are built in-house by the GamerX team. Others are adapted from open, freely available browser game projects, sometimes with substantial changes to art, mechanics, or code, sometimes closer to a direct port. GamerX hosts and publishes every game in the arcade, which is a separate thing from having originally built every game.

How we credit adapted games

Every adapted game carries its origin as structured data in the registry β€” author, project, licence and a link to the source β€” and the list below is generated from it, as is the attribution block on each game's own play page. Neither is typed by hand, so a game cannot be adapted here without appearing in both. A game absent from this list is original GamerX work.

These credits are a licence obligation rather than a courtesy. The MIT licence requires that the original copyright notice travel with the work; Creative Commons Attribution asks for the author, the title, the licence and a link. The entries below are written to satisfy the stricter of the two.

Games we removed rather than credit

In September 2026 we audited every game that had ever been published here against its actual upstream licence β€” the LICENSE file and the headers in the files we ship, not the README. Seven did not survive it and are gone for good, answering 410 at their old addresses.

The instructive one is HexGL, by Thibaut Despoulain. Its README grants MIT β€œunless specified in the file”, and nine of its gameplay files specify Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial. This site carries advertising, so NonCommercial is not something we can satisfy, and no amount of crediting fixes that. Two more were AGPL, two declared no licence at all, and two were built on other companies' characters. The full reasoning is recorded in the repository, in docs/game-licences.md.

If a credit is missing or wrong

If you created, co-created, or hold rights to a game hosted on GamerX and the credit is missing, incomplete, or incorrect, we want to fix that quickly. Two outcomes are on the table once we hear from you: we update the credit and license information to what you tell us is accurate, or, if you would rather the game not be hosted here at all, we take it down.

  • Email techinoiddev@gmail.com with the game name and a link to your original project or a way to verify your claim.
  • Tell us whether you want a correction (name, license, link) or a takedown.
  • We will confirm by email once it is handled, not just make the change silently.

Art and 3D assets

Several games use freely licensed 3D model kits alongside art made in house. None of these licenses require attribution, but naming them is the right thing to do and tells anyone building on this work where to find more of the same.

  • Kenney β€” City Kit (Commercial), Racing Kit, Food Kit, Tower Defense Kit, Nature Kit and Train Kit, released under CC0 1.0. Used for the trains and freight cars in Dash Run, the race car in Transform Race, the food props in Slice Shift, and the cannon, enemy tower and woodland in Swarm Cannon.
  • Quaternius β€” Ultimate Pirate Pack, Ultimate Animated Character Pack and Ultimate Animated Animals, released under CC0 1.0. Used for the shark in Transform Race, the people in Slice Shift, and the runners, the guard and the dog in Dash Run.
  • Background music by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under CC BY 4.0. Every track is listed below, with the game it plays in.

Music, track by track

CC BY 4.0 requires attribution. It does not require the credit to sit on screen while you play, which is where it used to be β€” so the in-game overlay is gone and the attribution lives here instead, in full. Most tracks are 45-second excerpts looped in the browser.

Software and fonts

Rendered from licenses/manifest.json, the same file the build check reads, so this page and the machine-readable manifest cannot drift apart. Where a licence header ships inside the file itself, the notice is quoted there verbatim.

Still being established

Honesty is worth more here than a tidy page. These are assets that ship today and whose licence we have not established to our own satisfaction. They are listed rather than quietly omitted, and we would rather hear from a rights holder than have them find it themselves.

  • assets/enhanced/*.glb β€” 347 MB of glTF including horror_corridor_1/2/5.glb, ship_bb.glb and zombie_walk_test.glb. No licence file, no provenance record in the repo. These ship to players today, so this is the largest open licensing question on the site.
  • chess-3d β€” realistic chess set model β€” The filename follows the Sketchfab download convention, which usually means CC BY 4.0 and a required credit. The author is not recorded anywhere in the repo.
  • Bensound tracks (www.bensound.com) β€” Bensound's free tier requires visible attribution and their licence is not a Creative Commons one. Five tracks ship. Phase 8 covers this.
  • Mixkit sound effects and music (mixkit.co) β€” The Mixkit Free License permits use without attribution but forbids redistribution as a standalone asset. Needs confirming per file. Phase 8.
  • Freesound community clips (freesound.org) β€” Freesound licences are per-upload (CC0, CC BY, CC BY-NC). Each clip needs its own entry. Phase 8.

Trademarks

Some games on GamerX are fan tributes or reimaginings that reference third-party trademarks or characters. Those trademarks belong to their respective owners, GamerX does not claim any rights to them, and any such game will be removed promptly on a valid request from the rights holder.
