Endless runner

3D endless runner: read the tunnel and keep going

Sprint the glow-lit caverns. The walls do not slow down.

An endless dash through a crystal cave. Snap between lanes, vault the stalagmites and chase a distance counter that always wants one more meter.

How to play Cave Runner

A three-lane endless sprint through a crystal cave. Swipe or use the arrows to switch lanes, swipe up or press up to jump, swipe down or press down to slide. Every obstacle wants exactly one of those three answers: a stalagmite is gone round, a low arch is slid under, a barrier is jumped. Reading which is which early is the whole game, and the cave gives you decent light to do it with. Space pauses. There is no destination - the distance counter simply keeps climbing, and the speed with it, until something finally catches you.

Tips

  • Pick the answer, then commit. Half a lane change plus a late jump is how most runs end.
  • Slide is the underused one. A lot of players jump reflexively at anything and get caught by the low arches.
  • Stay centre when nothing is coming. It is one move from either side lane, which halves your worst-case reaction distance.
  • The lighting tells you the shape of what is ahead before you can read the detail. Trust the silhouette.

About Cave Runner

Cave Runner is the purest endless runner in the arcade - three lanes, three inputs, no collectibles to distract from the dodging, and a distance counter as the only score. That austerity is the point: there is nothing to optimise except your reading speed, so improvement is unusually legible from one run to the next. The crystal cave setting earns its place by solving the genre's real problem, which is that a fast runner in a dark environment is unfair. Here the crystals light the tunnel from within and the obstacles are silhouetted against them, so you can always see the next decision in time, and the difficulty comes only from how long you have to make it.

Questions

What are the controls for Cave Runner?
Swipe or arrow left and right to change lane, up to jump, down to slide. Every obstacle needs exactly one of those three.
Is there an end?
No. It is a true endless runner: the speed keeps climbing and the score is the distance you reach.
Why do I keep hitting the low arches?
Almost everyone jumps by reflex. Those need a slide - it is the input players under-use.
Can I play Cave Runner on a Chromebook, at school, or on a phone?
Yes on a Chromebook. Cave Runner draws with WebGL, which every Chromebook has had for years, and it is built for integrated graphics rather than a dedicated card. On a school or office network there is nothing here for a filter to object to on the usual grounds: no download, no installer, no browser plugin, no account, no chat and no user-generated content. Whether your particular filter lets it through is its decision and not something any site can promise. It plays on a phone with touch controls, held upright, and on a keyboard if you have one.
