Centipede runner

A hundred legs, one rule: eat the small ones, steer round the big ones.

A 3D centipede runner through a giant garden. Your centipede walks down a long path on its own, every pair of legs stepping in a wave; drag to steer it. Every ball of your colour adds a segment. Other centipedes walk the path ahead of you, slower than you: catch one whose number is no bigger than yours and you eat it, its number added to your own. The red ones are bigger, and touching one, even the tip of its tail, ends the run. Gates add or take away segments, saws cut off your tail, spikes cost a quarter of you and the ponds in the path swallow you whole. The path runs through five worlds - Clover Garden, Autumn Leaf, Sunscorch Canyon, Frost Hollow and Glow Grove - each with its own track, plants and weather. Past the finish your centipede climbs round the stone pillars as far as its length reaches, and the longest runs reach the treasure chest.

How to play Centipede Run

Press anywhere to start, then hold and drag to move the head left and right. The centipede walks forward by itself and its body follows the exact path the head took. Eat the balls of your own colour for one segment each. The other centipedes walk ahead of you with a number over their heads: green ones are no bigger than you, so catch them up to add their number to yours, and keep clear of the red ones, which are bigger, even as you pass them. Pick the better panel of each gate, go round the fences, barrels and pumpkins, and keep your body out of the saws, because a saw keeps only the part of you in front of the blade. At the finish your length decides how many of the five pillars you climb round; reach the chest and you choose a reward. On the results screen, stop the swinging pointer on the biggest multiplier.

Tips

  • A centipede the same size as you is green and safe to eat, so a ball or two just before one can turn a red number green.
  • A red centipede bites only when you touch it, head to tail tip, so a close pass is safe. A big one is wide, though, and its body lies a long way behind its head.
  • A saw cuts wherever your body lies, not only your head. Swerve early so that your tail is clear of the blade as well.
  • Each pillar wants about six more length than the one before, and the chest wants a little over fifty.
  • Spend the first cash on LENGTH. A longer start makes the first gates and green centipedes easier to take.

About Centipede Run

Centipede Run is a centipede runner built in three.js, on the same rules as Snake Sprint. The body is drawn afresh every frame as a chain of glossy beaded segments laid along the path the head travelled, so it curls behind you as you steer, swells as each meal goes down and climbs round the bonus pillars at its full size. Every segment carries a pair of jointed legs, and the legs are moved by how far the centipede has walked, not by a timer: each foot plants, stays put on the ground while the body passes over it, then lifts and swings forward, a wave running from head to tail with the two sides half a step apart. The head has feelers that sway, pincers that open round a meal and a snap now and then, and the tail ends in two long prongs. The five worlds are built to the size of a bug, so the grass, clover and flowers at the side of the path stand taller than the centipede, with drifting pollen, falling leaves, desert dust, snow or fireflies in the air. There are nine skins, a new one earned every five levels, and thirteen hats.

Questions

Can I eat a centipede the same size as mine in Centipede Run?
Yes. A centipede whose number is equal to or smaller than your length is green, and running into it adds its number to yours. Only bigger ones, shown in red, end the run.
Do the legs really walk?
Yes. Each pair of legs steps in turn, in a wave down the body, and the feet stay planted on the ground while the body moves over them, so the centipede never looks as if it is sliding.
How is it different from Snake Sprint?
The rules are the same, so a level plays the same way, but you play a centipede with legs, and the path runs through a giant garden in five worlds instead of over the sea.
How do I reach the treasure chest?
Arrive at the finish long enough. Each of the five pillars needs more length than the last, and the chest beyond them needs a little over fifty. The chest lets you pick cash, gems or a new hat.
Can I play Centipede Run on a Chromebook, at school, or on a phone?
Yes on a Chromebook. Centipede Run draws with WebGL, which every Chromebook has had for years, and it is built for integrated graphics rather than a dedicated card. On a school or office network there is nothing here for a filter to object to on the usual grounds: no download, no installer, no browser plugin, no account, no chat and no user-generated content. Whether your particular filter lets it through is its decision and not something any site can promise. It plays on a phone with touch controls, held upright, and on a keyboard if you have one.
