Snake arena

Snake arena game: eat, grow and cut the others off

Eat, grow, and make the big ones crash into you.

A snake arena with twenty rivals in it. Steer your snake round a sea of glossy fruit and every bite makes you longer. Any snake whose head touches your body bursts into a river of glowing fruit, and so do you if your head touches theirs, so the whole game is making the others run into you while you stay out of their way. Hold boost to sprint across a rival's path and cut it off, at the cost of a little length. A Golden Frenzy erupts every minute and a quarter and the whole arena races for it. The snake that got you last time comes back marked REVENGE. Between matches your snakes sit on a merge board earning coins: merge two of a kind and you unlock a new character, 24 in all, from a white noodle to a golden king, each with a talent to pick. Climb seven leagues from Bronze to Legend, where the rivals are smarter and the arena is bigger.

Free to play, no download, no sign-up. Hosted with ❤ by GamerX.

How to play Snack Snakes

Press PLAY. Your snake never stops moving, so you only choose where it goes: drag the thumbstick on a phone, or point with the mouse on a computer. Eat fruit to grow. Hold boost - the lightning button, a second finger anywhere, a held click or Space - to sprint, which costs a little length and drops it behind you as crumbs. The only rule that matters: a head that touches another snake's body dies. So cross in front of a rival and let it run into you, and it bursts into fruit worth most of its length. Two heads meeting just bump apart. Keep clear of the fence round the arena. When you go down you can revive once with gems, and afterwards your snakes on the home board keep earning coins: drag two of the same snake together to merge them, and every new level is a new character.

Tips

  • Cut across a rival's head from the side, never from the front: heads that meet just bounce, but a head that meets your body is yours.
  • Boost to get in front of a smaller snake, then let go - boosting turns wide, and most deaths happen mid-boost.
  • Circle a small snake with a long body and it has nowhere left to go. That is a Coil Crusher.
  • Go for the Golden Frenzy early: the rivals race for it too, and a crowd is where the kills are.
  • Keep a Shield for the first minute of a big match. It survives one crash and pops.

About Snack Snakes

Snack Snakes was built in plain 2D canvas, with no image files at all: every head, fruit, cloud and button is drawn in code, so the game is small and starts fast. The rivals are bots with a skill level per league, and their difficulty was not guessed. Test players that do not share the rivals' brain played thousands of matches, which is how it was found that the first version killed a careful player in under a minute, that head-on collisions felt like bad luck rather than a mistake, and that kills were too rare to be fun. Heads now bump instead of killing, a share of clumsy rivals come to cut you off and mostly fail, and a match opens calmly. The result is that a careful player in Bronze lives about two and a half minutes and takes around seven snakes. The merge board was tuned the same way, by simulating whole careers: a new character arrives every match or two at first and every ten or so near the end.

Snack Snakes vs slither.io

The same rule: grow by eating, and any snake whose head touches your body is finished. Snack Snakes is single-player, with rivals that play at your league's level instead of a server full of strangers, so a new player is not dropped into an arena of giants. It adds what an endless arena lacks between rounds: a merge board of 24 characters to unlock, talents, seven leagues to climb, and a rival who comes back for revenge.

slither.iois someone else’s game and not affiliated with GamerX. It is named here because it is the clearest way to describe what Snack Snakes is.

Questions

How do I kill another snake in Snack Snakes?
Get your body in front of its head. Any snake whose head touches your body bursts into fruit, and the kill is yours. Two heads meeting just bump apart.
How do I boost?
Hold the lightning button or put a second finger anywhere on the screen on a phone; hold the mouse button or Space on a computer. Boosting costs a little length.
How do I unlock new snakes?
Snakes on the home board earn coins. Buy more and drag two of the same level together to merge them; every new level is a new character, 24 in all, and each one lets you pick a talent.
Is it multiplayer?
No. The other snakes are bots, matched to your league, so you are never dropped into an arena of players far bigger than you.
Can I play Snack Snakes on a Chromebook, at school, or on a phone?
Yes on a Chromebook. Snack Snakes draws to a plain 2D canvas, so it runs on just about anything with a browser. On a school or office network there is nothing here for a filter to object to on the usual grounds: no download, no installer, no browser plugin, no account, no chat and no user-generated content. Whether your particular filter lets it through is its decision and not something any site can promise. It plays on a phone with touch controls, and it is built wide - turning the phone sideways gives it the shape it was designed for. A keyboard works too.
