Snake escape puzzle

Snake escape puzzle: free every snake from the knot

Tap a snake and it slithers out head first, if nothing is in its way.

A 3D snake puzzle. A nest of snakes lies tangled on a tiled board in a garden, and every snake can only leave one way: out of its head. Tap one and it slithers off head first, its body following the exact path, over the edge and away across the garden. If another snake is in front of its head it bonks into it, the other snake hisses, and you lose one of your three hearts. Free every snake to clear the knot. Every three levels the grid grows, so the knots get bigger and the snakes smaller; pinch or scroll to zoom in. Burrows, frozen snakes, arrow tiles that turn a snake and padlocked snakes join in one at a time. Every fifth level is HARD and every tenth SUPER HARD. Five garden worlds, a level map, a daily knot, hints, a hammer, combos and a chest every five levels.

Free to play, no download, no sign-up. Hosted with ❤ by GamerX.

How to play Snake Knot

Every snake faces the way its head points, and that is the only way it can go. Look along the line in front of a head: if it runs clear to the edge of the board, or into a burrow, tap that snake and it slithers out, its body following its head exactly. If another snake lies anywhere in that line, the snake bonks into it and slides back, and you lose a heart (bumping the same snake again before any other has left costs nothing). Three hearts lost and the knot has won. An arrow tile turns any snake that slides over it, so follow the line round the arrow. A frozen snake needs one tap to crack its ice before it can move. A padlocked snake waits until the snake carrying the key of the same colour has left. Clear every snake to finish the level: no bumps earns three stars. Stuck? The hint lights a free snake and the way it will go, and the hammer knocks any one snake off the board.

Tips

  • Start at the edges. A snake on the rim with its head pointing out is always free, and taking it often frees the one behind it.
  • Follow the line from the head, not the shape of the body. A long snake curled across half the board only needs a clear line in front of its face.
  • An arrow tile bends the line. Trace it round the arrow: the snake turns there and carries on the new way.
  • Look for the keys. A padlocked snake will not budge until the snake under the key of the same colour has gone, so free that one early.
  • Crack the ice while you think. Tapping a frozen snake never costs a heart, and once it is cracked it is an ordinary snake.
  • On a big board, pinch to zoom in before you tap. The snakes are small and a careful tap saves a heart.
  • Tap the free ones in a quick run. Each tap within a second and a half of the last climbs the combo, and the coins buy hints, hammers and snake styles.

About Snake Knot

Snake Knot was built in three.js around one idea: the snakes should feel alive, not like arrows with scales. Each one is a tube of scales that follows its head exactly, so it slithers with a gentle S, round arrow tiles and away across the garden. They breathe, blink, look about, follow your finger and whatever is moving, flick their tongues, glare when something bumps them and see stars when they bump something; a bumped body is knocked aside and springs back. Every snake on the board is drawn as one object, so even a SUPER HARD knot of a hundred and sixty snakes runs smoothly on a phone. Every level is made from a seed, so it is the same for everybody, and every one is checked solvable before it is shown: a nest is packed with snakes (some laid on purpose to round the arrow tiles and dive down the burrows), any knot that could never come undone is untied, and then the knot is made harder while it stays solvable. Taking a snake out only ever frees space, so no tap can make a level impossible; only a careless one costs a heart. The music is Kevin MacLeod, a track for each world; the sounds are Kenney's jingles and real foley.

Questions

How do I know which snake can move?
Look ahead of each head. If nothing is in that line all the way to the edge of the board (or to a burrow), that snake can leave. If the line crosses an arrow tile, it turns there: follow the arrow. Its body never matters, only the line in front of its face.
Can a level become impossible?
No. Every level is checked solvable before you see it, and taking a snake out only ever opens space, so the knot can always be cleared. A wrong tap only costs a heart.
Why will a snake not move when I tap it?
It is either frozen (the first tap cracks the ice, then it can go) or padlocked. A padlocked snake waits until the snake carrying the key of the same colour has left; then the key flies over and the padlock springs off.
What makes a HARD level hard?
Every fifth level is HARD: a bigger board and a deeper knot, with more rounds of snakes to free before the last one. Every tenth is SUPER HARD, bigger still. They pay more coins.
What happens when I run out of hearts?
The level starts again from the beginning, or you can spend coins on one more heart and carry on where you were.
Is there a new puzzle every day?
Yes. The Daily Knot is a big board that is the same for every player that day, and clearing it pays double coins.
Can I play Snake Knot on a Chromebook, at school, or on a phone?
Yes on a Chromebook. Snake Knot draws with WebGL, which every Chromebook has had for years, and it is built for integrated graphics rather than a dedicated card. On a school or office network there is nothing here for a filter to object to on the usual grounds: no download, no installer, no browser plugin, no account, no chat and no user-generated content. Whether your particular filter lets it through is its decision and not something any site can promise. It plays on a phone with touch controls, held upright, and on a keyboard if you have one.
