Free-swim runner

The one arcade game where you can actually swim — up, down, left, right.

Free 2D movement through a sunlit reef: no lanes, just open water. Your air runs down as you swim, so dive through air bubbles to fill up, keep clear of the spiked rocks and stinging jellyfish that knock the air out of you, ride the glowing current rings for a burst of speed, and scoop up pearls on the way to the ring at the end of the reef.

How to play Current Swim

Unlike every other runner here, this one has no lanes. You swim freely in any direction through a reef - drag anywhere and the swimmer follows your finger, or use all four arrow keys - and the level scrolls past while you go where you like within it. The meter at the top is your air. It runs down the whole dive; big blue-rimmed air bubbles fill it up again, and the dark rocks with red spikes and the purple jellyfish knock air out of you when you hit them. Run out and the dive is over. Glowing current rings give a burst of speed, so the fast line and the safe line are often not the same, and pearls with gold rings are the prize. Reach the glowing ring at the end of the reef to clear it.

Tips

  • Use the whole tunnel. The instinct from lane runners is to sit in the middle, and the middle is where most of the hazards are.
  • Air bubbles never sit in the middle of the reef. Watch the meter and swim for one before it runs low.
  • A current ring commits you. The speed burst reduces your reaction time for a second or two, so take one only when the water ahead is clear.
  • Jellyfish drift and rocks do not. Treat a jellyfish's current position as a guess and give it more room than it appears to need.
  • Vertical movement is as free as horizontal. Going over or under something is often easier than going around it.

About Current Swim

Current Swim exists because of a gap in the arcade: every other runner on the site moves along a line, whether that is three lanes or one. Free two-dimensional movement changes the genre more than it sounds like it should - hazards can no longer be arranged as a rhythm to be learned, so the game becomes continuous spatial reading rather than pattern recognition, and the player's skill is in route-finding rather than timing. The reef setting suits that: open water with coral structure gives the space visual landmarks without imposing a corridor, and the sunlit caustics make depth readable, which matters when you are free to move in a plane the camera is looking across.

Questions

How is Current Swim different from other runners?
It has no lanes. You move freely up, down, left and right through open water, so avoiding hazards is a question of route-finding rather than of picking one of three positions.
What do the glowing rings do?
They give a burst of speed. That is useful and also risky - going faster means less time to react to whatever is next.
Is there an end?
Yes: the glowing ring at the end of the reef. Reach it with air left and the reef is cleared.
Why did I run out of air?
The air meter at the top drains the whole dive. Swim through the blue-rimmed air bubbles to fill it, and keep clear of the spiked rocks and jellyfish, which knock air out of you.
