Sailing Games Online — Free Boat & Water Games

A sailing game where the wind is the whole problem, and two more built on water. Free in a browser, with nothing to install and no sign-up at all.

Almost no browser game models wind, because it is the kind of thing a player notices only when it is wrong. Broadside models it, and the first thing it teaches you is that you cannot sail into it: point too close and the sails empty and you stop. Making ground upwind means tacking, a zig-zag of long diagonals turning through the wind at each corner, and that single rule is what turns a naval fight into a thinking game.

Your guns only bear abeam, out to the sides, so a battle is a matter of arranging your hull across somebody else’s while keeping theirs off yours - which is a question about the wind before it is a question about aim. Sink a hunter, sail over the wreck to loot it, and get the haul back to port before somebody takes it off you.

⚠️ Being straight about the shelf: there is one sailing game here. The other two are on water and are not boats, and are on the page because people looking for one often want the other. Sliding Wave is surfing - hold to climb the face, release to dive. Current Swim is a fish reading a current. If you came specifically for ships, Broadside is the one.

Questions

Is there a free sailing game I can play in a browser?
Broadside. It models the wind properly - you cannot sail into it, so upwind means tacking - and the guns only fire abeam, which makes a fight about where your hull is rather than where you are pointing. No download and no account.
How many of these are actually boat games?
One. Sliding Wave is surfing and Current Swim is a fish; both are on water and neither is a boat. We would rather say so than pad the list.
Do I need a keyboard?
Broadside plays either way: on a phone the HELM and CANVAS buttons steer and set sail and PORT and STBD fire the batteries, and on a keyboard it is A and D, W and S, and Q and E. The other two are touch-first.
Are they unblocked on a school network?
Nothing here needs a download, an installer, a browser plugin, an account or a chat feature, and those are the usual reasons a games site is on a filter list. Whether your particular network lets it through is its decision - a filter is somebody else’s allowlist and no site can honestly promise around one.
