Parking jam puzzle

Parking jam puzzle: clear the car park, fill the bays

Drive the cars out of the jam, and get every passenger on board.

A 3D parking jam puzzle at a railway station. A train pulls in and a queue of passengers in seven colours waits on the platform. Behind the pick-up bays is a packed car park of cars, vans and buses, each painted one of the same colours, each with an arrow on its roof. Tap one and it drives out the way its arrow points, if nothing is in the way, and round the road to a free bay; if something is in the way it bumps into it and rolls back. The passenger at the front of the queue gets into the vehicle of their colour, and when a vehicle is full it drives away and frees its bay. Only four bays are open, so fill them with colours nobody wants yet and the queue gets stuck. Vans join on level 2, buses on level 4, cones on level 8, grey mystery cars on level 12 and frozen ones on level 16. Every fifth level is HARD and every tenth SUPER HARD. Four lines of fifteen stations, a route map, a daily run, three boosters and a chest every five levels.

How to play Park & Ride

Every vehicle can only drive the way the arrow on its roof points. Look along the arrow: if nothing stands between the vehicle and the edge of the car park, tap it and it drives out, round the road and into the first free bay. If something is in the way, it bumps into it and rolls back. That costs nothing but time. The queue on the platform only moves when the passenger at the front can get on: they board the first vehicle of their colour that you sent. A car takes 4 passengers, a van 6 and a bus 10. A full vehicle drives away and frees its bay. If every open bay holds a vehicle that the front of the queue cannot board, you are stuck: open a locked bay with coins, use a booster, or try again. Get everyone on board to clear the level. Clear it without opening a bay for three stars.

Tips

  • Watch the front of the queue, not the back. Send the vehicle the next few passengers want, and nothing else.
  • Keep a bay spare when you can. A bay holding a colour nobody wants yet is a bay the queue cannot use.
  • Free the vehicles on the edge first. Each one that leaves can clear the way for the ones behind it.
  • Send a bus when a long run of its colour is coming. It holds ten, so it sits in its bay a long time.
  • Grey cars hide their colour until their way out is clear. Clear a path to one early, so you know what it is.
  • The number on a frozen vehicle is how many more passengers must board before the ice breaks.
  • Stuck? Shuffle repaints the vehicles still in the car park so the free ones get the colours wanted soonest, VIP lifts any vehicle straight to a bay, and Sort brings forward the passengers who can board what is already waiting.

About Park & Ride

Park & Ride was built in three.js to feel like a real little station. The vehicles drive like real ones: both axles follow the road, so a bus swings wide round a corner, leaves the car park straight until its tail is clear, and backs out of its bay before it drives off. Every drive is planned round the others before it starts, so vehicles wait for each other at the junctions and never drive through one another. The passengers step off the train, queue along the platform, run to their vehicle when it pulls up and sit in its seats, so you can see how many places are left. Every level is made by playing it: the car park is packed so that every vehicle can get out, and the queue is written by sending the vehicles one at a time, so every level has a way through. A bot that plays like a careful person then checks that it can be won before you see it. The train and the cones are from Kenney, the trees from Quaternius; the engines, horns and tyres are real recordings from BigSoundBank, and the music is by Kevin MacLeod.

Park & Ride vs Parking Jam 3D

The same first move: a car park packed tight, and every car can only leave the way it faces. Here that is half the puzzle. The other half is the platform: a queue of passengers who each want a vehicle of their own colour, and only four bays to park in, so the order you free the vehicles matters as much as the way out.

Parking Jam 3Dis someone else’s game and not affiliated with GamerX. It is named here because it is the clearest way to describe what Park & Ride is.

Questions

Which vehicle can I move?
Look along the arrow on its roof. If nothing is between the vehicle and the edge of the car park, it can drive out. Cones never move, and a vehicle in the way has to go first.
What happens if I tap a vehicle that is blocked?
It drives forward, bumps into whatever is in its way and rolls back. Nothing is lost but a moment.
Why is the queue not moving?
The passenger at the front has no vehicle of their colour waiting. Send one out, or wait for the one on its way. They always get into the first vehicle of their colour that you sent.
Can a level become impossible?
Every level is checked before you see it: a careful player can always win it with the bays it starts with (on a SUPER HARD level, with one more bay). Filling the bays with the wrong colours can still leave you stuck, and then you can open a bay, use a booster or start again.
What are the grey and the frozen vehicles?
A grey vehicle hides its colour until its way out is clear. A frozen one sits in a block of ice with a number on it; every passenger who boards anything melts it by one, and at nought it can drive.
Is there a new puzzle every day?
Yes. The Daily Run is a big car park that is the same for every player that day, and clearing it pays double coins.
Can I play Park & Ride on a Chromebook, at school, or on a phone?
Yes on a Chromebook. Park & Ride draws with WebGL, which every Chromebook has had for years, and it is built for integrated graphics rather than a dedicated card. On a school or office network there is nothing here for a filter to object to on the usual grounds: no download, no installer, no browser plugin, no account, no chat and no user-generated content. Whether your particular filter lets it through is its decision and not something any site can promise. It plays on a phone with touch controls, held upright, and on a keyboard if you have one.
