Stealth assassin

Stealth game: stay out of the light and strike from behind

Stay out of the light. Strike from behind.

A stealth game seen from above. Tap where you want to go and your assassin walks there, and every guard on the floor sweeps a flashlight that walls and crates cut short. Walk up behind a guard and you take him down without a sound; let him see you for too long and a question mark over his head fills, he shouts, and he shoots. Step back into the dark before it fills and he forgets you. Take down every target to clear the level. New kinds of guard arrive as you go: lookouts whose light never stops turning, armoured heavies you can only beat from behind, runners, cameras that raise the alarm, snipers with a long red laser and a boss every fifth level. Chain takedowns for combos, finish unseen for a Ghost bonus, and spend the gems on thirteen heroes and upgrades.

How to play Takedown

Tap or click anywhere on the floor and your assassin walks there, drawing the route as a yellow line. Guards carry flashlights: stay out of the lit cones and walk into a guard from behind to take him down silently. If a guard sees you, a question mark over his head starts to fill - step back into the dark before it fills and he forgets you; let it fill and he shouts, fires, and the others come looking. Take down every target to finish the level. Gems from each takedown buy new heroes and upgrades between levels.

Tips

  • Wait for a turning light to pass, then go. Patience is faster than a restart.
  • Crates and walls cut the flashlight short. A guard cannot see through the corner he is facing.
  • Take down guards within a few seconds of each other for a combo and more gems.
  • A heavy is armoured at the front. Only ever approach one from behind.
  • Finish a level without being seen at all for the Ghost bonus, which doubles your gems.

About Takedown

Takedown is built in 3D with three.js and viewed through a tilted overhead camera, so it reads like a top-down game but the rooms have depth and the lights are cut properly by every wall. The guards were tuned against test players of three temperaments - careful, casual and reckless. The first version let a reckless player sprint straight at every guard and win, because a guard took longer to notice you than it took to cross his light. Noticing is now faster up close and faster for a guard who is already searching, so stealth is the way through rather than one way among several.

Takedown vs Hunter Assassin

The same idea: tap to move, keep out of the flashlight cones and take guards down from behind. Takedown adds a moment of doubt to every guard - a question mark that fills while he can see you and drains when you step back into the dark - so a mistake can be recovered. It also brings in a new kind of guard every level up to the seventh, and plays in a browser with nothing to install.

Hunter Assassinis someone else’s game and not affiliated with GamerX. It is named here because it is the clearest way to describe what Takedown is.

Questions

How do I take down a guard in Takedown?
Walk into him from outside his flashlight. From behind, the takedown is silent and automatic - you do not need to press anything.
What does the question mark over a guard mean?
He can see you and is working out what you are. Get back into the dark before it fills and he forgets you. If it fills, he shouts and shoots.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It was designed for phones held upright: tap where to go, or keep your finger down to steer. On a computer, click or use WASD.
How do I unlock new heroes?
Every takedown drops gems. Spend them on the thirteen heroes and on upgrades to blood, speed and greed between levels. A daily chest adds more.
Can I play Takedown on a Chromebook, at school, or on a phone?
Yes on a Chromebook. Takedown draws with WebGL, which every Chromebook has had for years, and it is built for integrated graphics rather than a dedicated card. On a school or office network there is nothing here for a filter to object to on the usual grounds: no download, no installer, no browser plugin, no account, no chat and no user-generated content. Whether your particular filter lets it through is its decision and not something any site can promise. It plays on a phone with touch controls, held upright, and on a keyboard if you have one.
