Transformation racer

Shape-shifting race: pick the form the ground needs

Drive, climb, swim โ€” pick the right form or lose the lead.

A four-way race up a giant ramp where the ground keeps changing under you. Each gate makes you choose a form: drive the road, climb the wall, swim the water, or run anywhere and lose ground doing it. Pick wrong and you can bail out on to your own two feet rather than ride the mistake to the bottom. Between the gates there are coins to sweep up, boost pads to hit and barrels to miss, and the coins unlock the other three racers. Race the computer or open a room and take on three real people.

How to play Transform Race

Four racers go up a giant ramp and the ground keeps changing under you. At each gate you steer โ€” left, right or drag โ€” into the form that suits what is coming: a car for road, a climber for wall, a swimmer for water. The NEXT panel at the top left names the ground the next gate leads on to and the form that suits it, with the distance to the gate, and the progress bar is coloured with the whole course's terrain, so nothing arrives unannounced. After each gate a callout says what you became and whether it suits the ground. Pick right and you pull away; pick wrong and you are crossing a surface you are not built for while three rivals go past. If you know you have taken the wrong gate you can flick up to bail out and run on your own two feet, which is slower than the right form and much faster than riding the mistake to the bottom. Between the gates there is a whole second game: coins to sweep up, boost pads worth going out of your way for, and barrels that are not. The coins unlock the other three racers. Race the computer, or open a room and take three real people.

Tips

  • Look past the gate, not at it. The form you need is decided by the ground after it - the NEXT panel names it before you get there.
  • On a phone, drag to steer. A thumb resting on the screen does nothing, so you can hold the phone however is comfortable.
  • Bailing out is a real option, not an admission. A flick up the moment you realise costs a second; riding a wrong form to the next gate costs the race.
  • Boost pads are worth a detour and barrels never are. When they sit together, take the line that misses the barrel.
  • The runner form works everywhere and wins nowhere, so choosing it deliberately means you have already given up that stretch.
  • In multiplayer everyone misreads the same gates you do. A clean run through a section where the field guesses wrong is worth more than any top speed.

About Transform Race

Transform Race takes the transformation-racer idea โ€” the vehicle that morphs to suit the terrain โ€” and makes the morph a decision rather than a cutscene. Because the form is chosen at a gate, the race becomes a sequence of small reading tests and the lead changes hands on judgement rather than on speed. All four mounts are separately modelled and separately handled, so a car behaves like a car and the swimmer has to swim, which is what makes a wrong pick feel like a mistake instead of a penalty. The bail-out is the kindest thing in it: every other game of this shape locks you into the bad choice until the next checkpoint, and being able to step off and run turns a ruined race into a recoverable one. It runs against three AI rivals or as a real-time room for three other people.

Questions

How do I choose a form in Transform Race?
Steer into the gate you want as you reach it, with the arrow keys or by dragging. Each gate is a fork and the side you pass through decides what you become for the next stretch. The NEXT panel tells you which form the ground after the gate needs.
What do I do if I pick the wrong gate?
Flick up to bail out and run on foot. It is slower than the correct form and far faster than crossing a whole section in the wrong one.
What are the coins for?
They unlock the other three racers. Boost pads are the other thing worth a detour; barrels are the thing to miss.
Can I play against real people?
Yes. As well as racing three AI rivals you can open a room and race up to three other players in real time.
Can I play Transform Race on a Chromebook, at school, or on a phone?
Yes on a Chromebook. Transform Race draws with WebGL, which every Chromebook has had for years, and it is built for integrated graphics rather than a dedicated card. On a school or office network there is nothing here for a filter to object to on the usual grounds: no download, no installer, no browser plugin, no account, no chat and no user-generated content. Whether your particular filter lets it through is its decision and not something any site can promise. It plays on a phone with touch controls, and it is built wide - turning the phone sideways gives it the shape it was designed for. A keyboard works too.
